Madeleine McCann's Siblings Describe Supposed Harasser's Actions as Extremely Disturbing and Creepy

Maddie McCann brother and sister, Amelie and Sean, have testified in court that their interactions with an accused harasser were deeply upsetting and creepy. The siblings described feeling stressed and frightened by a woman who insisted she was their missing sister.

Relentless Communication Described as Frightening

Appearing remotely, she described how the defendant, Julia Wandelt, reached out to her repeatedly through online platforms and written correspondence. Amelie explained the relentlessness was very frightening since you don’t know what she’ll do next.

Communications from the defendant were presented in the trial, in which she recounted recollections of being in the family home that she said were recalled during hypnotherapy. Amelie testified, It's very upsetting that she's inventing these alleged memories, despite the fact she’s not Maddie.

Altered Pictures Increased Unease

Jurors learned that Wandelt had produced images of Amelie and herself as children, which the prosecution alleged were generated with ChatGPT. A number of these photos were sent through online channels, while others were produced physically and enclosed in a mail to her.

Amelie said, It was unpleasant, it caused me to feel very uneasy. It was evident she edited the images to make me look more like her, which was quite distressing. I knew I didn’t look like that, I knew it had been manipulated.

Psychological Impact on the Household

Amelie also spoke about the impact of the alleged stalking on her parent, Kate, who gave evidence about being approached at home by Wandelt and her co-defendant, Karen Spragg.

I think my mum found it the hardest. My mother was targeted by the defendant more than the others in the family and I believe it certainly had a negative effect on her and her mental health, Amelie said. It’s upsetting when someone’s begging you to believe them and playing with your emotions, to the extent you are doubting your own judgment.

Sibling's Testimony on Anxiety and Digital Scrutiny

In a witness statement read to the court, her brother said that for him, he had not been severely impacted by Wandelt's accused harassment. But he had been distressed that she was drawing social media scrutiny, with people saying nasty and unfair comments about his mother and father.

In the event that Wandelt was not suffering from a psychological condition and was completely conscious she is not Madeleine, yet continues to assert she is, that will be very distressing for me, he testified. I am convinced she is my sibling. The reality that Julia is engaging in this behavior has caused me a great deal of anxiety and I consider it deeply troubling.

Wandelt and her co-defendant deny harassing the McCann family. Proceedings are ongoing.
